Vacant for more than 30 years, this rundown property had become uninhabitable and a haven for neighborhood drug dealers. “We felt that the community needed a solid, good-looking building that people could depend on to be well-managed and looked after,” Ali said. “The whole focus of the project was turning the building back to the community.” After nearly $1.5 million in renovation costs, the building features amenities that are rarely seen in affordable housing properties. Surveillance cameras discourage criminal activity, and hardwood floors and quality craftsmanship are just a few of the new traits that make 5836 W. Madison Ave. unrecognizable from its previous sorry state. The Good Neighbor Awards, an annual awards banquet hosted by the Chicago Association of REALTORS®, recognizes outstanding properties throughout Chicago that have positively impacted their surrounding communities.
