THE SKYLIGHT PRESENTS

LA TRAVIATA
FEBRUARY 1 – 17, 2008

review by Ed Vincent

La Traviata, by Giuseppe Verdi is known all over the world, yet few have heard the production in mid-western english, spiced
with current vernacular, and set in present day garb.  This portion of the tale is actually historically reminiscent of the
opening of La Traviata in 1853.  The first performance was in Venice on March 6th, 1853.  La Traviata was called a flop at the time for a couple of reasons, one was the Opera had folks on stage in current dress, it was contemporary (
1853 clothes) and
not in the distant past, as had been the custom.  This new adaptation, with some plot changes and a different language,
is also set in the current period--which is actually in the desire
of Verdi.   I am not sure Verdi would have liked the plot changes, though some are needed given the state of current medicine.

The performance appears quirky in the beginning, with a
half bald tall man in women's clothes helping "V" (
Violetta)
get things in order as she comes late to the stage in Las Vegas,
having snorted a good quantity of cocaine.  Instead of Violetta being a courtesan-prostitute, she is portrayed as a pop star with
a drug habit and other undisclosed issues.  The scenes are beautifully staged in the wonderous Cabot theater, with grand sets and imaginative decor.  There is not a bad seat in the house which holds a meager 360 people.

Julianne Borg has a powerful, yet agile voice, which is required

to do vocal justice to the role of Violetta.  Borg is the star of

the show as she sings in contorted positions and carries her

words with charm.  I  wished I had seen her in Carmen, but

you can see her La Traviata, if you get your  tickets soon.

The whole cast is gifted, but a background in grand Opera is

a plus.  We highly recommend this production to all with a

taste for something different, and something well done.

THE SKYLIGHT PRESENTS

LA TRAVIATA
FEBRUARY 1 – 17, 2008

Milwaukee, WI (January 23, 2008)…The Skylight presents a Giuseppe Verdi masterpiece,

LA TRAVIATA, February 1 – 17, 2008 in the Cabot Theatre of the Broadway Theatre Center, 158 North Broadway located in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward.  This romantic opera comes just in time for Valentine’s Day and features an irresistible score and deeply human characters.  Tickets are on sale now.  Single ticket prices range from $15 - $54 and discounts are available for groups, seniors and students.

LA TRAVIATA is a timeless tale of love, loss and reconciliation.  It has
been reinvented for the Cabot stage in a contemporary setting.  Violetta is a successful star who has reached the top of her career in the music scene.  World tours, top-of-the-chart singles and sold-out concerts do not make up for the years of compromise that she has put herself through.  Despite her success, she finds herself feeling lost and empty, that is, until she meets Alfred GermontAlfred is a handsome, young political hopeful following in the footsteps of his father on the path to the White House.  Alfred’s father convinces Violetta to break off this relationship in fear that her reputation will ruin them all.  Violetta agrees leaving Alfred feeling hurt and betrayed, so he seeks his revenge.  Romance, tragedy and broken hearts, it’s all here in LA TRAVIATA.

Skylight favorite David Gagnon (THE MIDNIGHT ANGEL) returns to play the lovesick Alfred, and Julianne Borg will make her Skylight debut as the beautiful Violetta.  Librettist of this new production, Dimitri Toscas, will also provide stage direction.  The Skylight’s resident Music Director Jamie Johns will serve as conductor.  The production team includes Scenic Designer Takeshi Kata, Lighting Designer Kurt Schnabel and Costume Designer Carol J.
