The Letter Carrier Food Drive is May 10, 2008

This is the 16th anniversity of this national drive.

The success of the drive is largely attributed to the amount of media exposure received. Oak Park / River Forest lags considerably behind other post offices of our size across the nation in the amount of donations received the last few years. This is a charitable, volunteer effort; with carriers laboring 'off the clock' once their routes have being completed on this day.

The local beneficiaries of this food drive would be the Oak Park & River Forest Food Pantry on Lake St. across from the post office, Sara's Inn (a domestic violence abuse victim's haven), and the Oak Park chapter of Vital Bridges (a community intervention organization).

The Letter Carrier Food Drive is May 10, 2008, (always the second Saturday in May). Letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America will do much more than deliver mail. They also will collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers during this largest one-day food drive in the nation.

All citizens need to do is to place a box or can of non-perishable food next to their mailbox before their mail carrier delivers mail on Saturday, May 10. The carrier will do all the rest. The food is taken back to a postal station, sorted, and then delivered to an area food bank or pantry. There it is available for needy families.

Please help galvanize the Oak Park / River Forest community in this effort by printing a prominent piece in your paper concerning this food drive. I have any additional information you may need, such as a news release and an interesting fact sheet of the history and purpose of this food drive. Also, cartoonist Bill Keane of 'The Family Circle' created a cartoonish depiction promoting the food drive which he has authorized to be reprinted as promotion for this drive. News coverage the day of the drive would also be a plus, as it may encourage more community participation next year.
