Repeal 'Corruption Tax,' Challenges Peraica

Chicago, IL - Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica, candidate for State's Attorney has called for the repeal of the new county sales tax and laid the blame for the tax at the door of the Cook County State's Attorney's office for failing to investigate corruption in county and city government.

"We gather here today to mark the official start of the Cook County Corruption Tax - the massive sales tax increase passed by the County Board in February," said Commissioner Tony Peraica. "Why do we call it the Corruption Tax? Because the insiders passed it to pay for the corruption, waste, fraud and abuse that drains millions in tax dollars.

"While most share their frustration with the county board for passing this tax, I am here to put the blame squarely in the lap of the Cook County State's Attorney. This is a State's Attorney's office that has a reputation for turning a blind eye to the prosecution of corruption. While our U.S. Attorney is busy issuing indictments - our State's Attorney is out to lunch. And they want to replace him with another loyal insider of City Hall.

"If we had a State's Attorney who investigated and prosecuted corruption, we would not have this corruption tax. If we had a State's Attorney who put public safety and law enforcement over protecting political cronies, we would not have this Corruption Tax.

"As a member of the County Board, I will present a resolution at out next meeting to rescind this corruption tax. And when I am elected State's Attorney, I will weed out the corruption that, as of today, is taking a direct hit at the pocketbooks of Cook County's employers, consumers and working families."
