LaFleur, of Alliance for Environmental Sustainability to a Green Career What is a green career? A green career is one in which the present generation meets its needs in ways that allow future generations to meet theirs. A green career is one that considers a triple bottom line: Planet, People, and Profit. Jason LaFleur, of Alliance for Environmental Sustainability, spoke Tuesday (11/17/09) about emerging green careers and the green careers you can create for yourself. It is fitting that he spoke in the LEED certified Public Works building in Oak Park. LaFleur says that green or clean careers fall in the following categories: Generating / storing renewable energy
Recycling existing materials Energy efficient product management, distribution, installation, maintainace Education, compliance, awareness Natural and sustainable product manufacturing Mr. Jason LaFleur discusses issues with attendees. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo LaFleur suggests three steps to finding a green career you will enjoy. First, choose your green goals. Examples of these goals could be water conservation, reduction of greenhouse gasses or production of clean energy. Next, inventory your interests. Consider your strengths, previous career successes, education and other life experiences. Then pick an industry where putting your goals and interests to work will move the field in a green direction. LaFleur says that volunteering or internships in your desired area are excellent ways to gain experience, make sure you like your choice and to make contacts in your that area. Another path to consider is to green up you current job, business or field by working from within. Training is available in green fields at local community colleges such as Wright College in Chicago and Triton Community College in River Grove.
