MAYOR DALEY NAMES CHICAGO “ONE CITY” AGAINST EXTREME POVERTY

Daley joins with ONE to raise awareness of lifesaving U.S. efforts

CHICAGO- Mayor Richard Daley joined local members of “ONE Vote 2010” to discuss ONE’s local efforts in the community and officially declare Chicago a "ONE City.” ONE Vote 2010 is a bipartisan effort to engage Senate candidates, statewide leaders and voters in America’s fight against global poverty and preventable disease.

By becoming a ONE City, Chicago joins more than 130 cities across the United States working to get people involved in the battle against extreme poverty and preventable disease. American leadership on this front has helped save millions of lives in the world’s poorest countries, particularly in Africa.  While meeting with ONE Congressional District Leader Tzviatko Chiderov and other ONE members, the Mayor also spoke about his strong belief that investing in global development makes for an effective National Security policy.

“Healthy people and communities are the foundation of any strong and vibrant society.  Organizations like ONE empower Americans to rally their fellow Americans, one by one, to fight extreme poverty and preventable diseases throughout the world,” said Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. “Therefore, I name Chicago to be a city of ONE and encourage citizens to take action in our local community and carry on America’s time-honored tradition of helping the world’s poorest. “

ONE Vote 2010 builds on the success of ONE Vote ’08, a national campaign that helped generate historic commitments from candidates of both parties, including President Barack Obama and Senator John McCain. ONE Vote 2010 will engage both political candidates and their communities to invest in smart solutions to help the world’s poorest, 1 billion of whom live on less than a dollar a day, find their own pathways out of extreme poverty.

“We are very excited that Mayor Daley has proclaimed Chicago a ONE City, which will join in the fight to end extreme poverty,” said Sheila Nix, U.S. Executive Director of ONE. “Thanks in large part to American leadership, more than four million people living with HIV in Africa are now receiving medicines that keep them alive and strong, up from just 50,000 people in 2002, deaths from malaria in Rwanda and Ethiopia have been cut in half, and 42 million African children were able to go to school for the first time.

“The commitment of Mayor Daley and the city of Chicago to work with ONE will add real momentum to our fight to eradicate extreme poverty and preventable disease,” said Nix.

ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. For more information please visit www.ONE.org
