May 21, 2011 A group of zealot lunatics have named this Saturday as the day of Rapture, where the holy who have accepted Christ will float through the air to heaven and leave the rest of the damned here on earth. Revelation 9:5 Atheist business vows to rescue pets on May 21 in case of Rapture, owners ascend to heaven (New York Daily News Story) Farmers’ Market to begin 36th season The Oak Park Farmers’ Market will open for its 36th season on Sat., May 21. The Farmers’ Market is held from 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. every Saturday from opening day through October in the Pilgrim Congregational Church parking lot, 460 Lake St., one block west of Ridgeland Ave. In addition to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, bedding plants, honey, cheese and frozen meat, the Market also features donuts made on-site, fresh coffee and live bluegrass music. Regional vendors will feature sustainable, organic and locally sourced goods again this season, including several heirloom products. To help support market, a variety of items will be sold at the information tent, including reusable shopping bags. This season’s special events will include Go Green on May 21 and 28, a corn roast on Aug. 20 and stone soup on the Market’s final day, Oct. 29. Non-profit bake sales will be offered each Saturday as well as occasional cooking demonstrations featuring chefs from local restaurants. Community-wide Earth Fest set for Sat., May 21Earth Fest 2011, a gathering of eco-friendly vendors, groups, children’s activities and live entertainment, is set for 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., Sat., May 21, at the Oak Park Public Works Center, 201 South Blvd. In its inaugural year, Earth Fest drew more than 250 people and event organizers hope to double that number in 2011. According to Maria Onesto Moran, one of Earth Fest’s organizers, the day is meant to be a celebration of the many sustainable initiatives in the Village. “It is an engaging, family-friendly day whose mission is to educate and inform people on how to live greener lives,” said Moran. “I’m thrilled that in its second year, Earth Fest will be twice as large as it was in 2010.” Earth Fest 2011 also will coincide with a celebration of Public Works Day, which will feature an open house to give the public an inside look at the LEED-certified Public Works Center, including an up-close look at the building and equipment, snacks and activities.

This year’s theme is “Discover Silver,” as we give a nod toward Seniors during the month of May. Hours: Friday 6-10 p.m.; Saturday 11:00 a.m-7:00 p.m. The galleries will be open late Friday night with special activities, guests and music. On Saturday, as well as having special events and activities in the galleries, a portion of Harrison Street will be closed off for exhibitor booths. Nicor Employees to Give Back to Communities
During 15th Annual Nicor Volunteer Day More than 1,000 volunteers to donate time to 23 charities throughout Illinois Nicor employees, families, and friends will support the company’s philanthropic commitment by coming together to complete service projects in their communities for Nicor’s 15th Annual Volunteer Day on Saturday, May 21. More than 1,000 Nicor employees will participate in the 2011 Volunteer Day, celebrating the company’s commitment to help build stronger communities through volunteerism. They will complete 23 philanthropic projects for nonprofit organizations in 20 Illinois communities. Participants will be performing a variety of hands-on community service activities, including cleaning and beautifying outdoors spaces, building a wheelchair ramp for a veteran, sorting food and household goods at local food pantries, painting community spaces, and helping to build homes for five families in need. In addition to the thousands of volunteer hours donated during Nicor’s 15th Annual Volunteer Day, the company will also be presenting a $15,000 capital grant to the DuPage Habitat for Humanity at the project site in West Chicago. 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers will be landscaping and painting at Hesed House in Aurora. Volunteers for this project will meet at 659 S. River Street.· Brookfield Zoo, located at 3300 Golf Road in Brookfield, will have volunteers, accompanied by their young children, completing an animal-themed craft project. Volunteers will add a fresh coat of paint to the fences that surround the Hanson Center, located at 15W431 E. 59th Street in Burr Ridge, which is a part of the Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities. DeKalb volunteers will meet at the Salvation Army Food Pantry to plant a community garden and beautify outdoor spaces at 830 Grove Street. Volunteers
will participate in landscaping activities at a Downers Grove-area
shelter on behalf of Family Shelter Services.
Naperville volunteers will participate in planting and outdoor beautification activities at The Conservation Foundation in DuPage County. Participants will meet at 10S404 Knoch Knolls Road. Volunteers and their young children will have the opportunity to clean exhibits at the DuPage Children’s Museum, located at 301 N. Washington Street in Naperville. Volunteers, including Naperville Mayor A. George Pradel, will be sorting food collected during recent community drives at Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry at 1871 High Grove Lane in Naperville. Schaumburg volunteers will help children in need across the world by creating individual meal packages at Feed My Starving Children, located at 1072 National Parkway. Volunteers will be sorting and organizing food at the Northern Illinois Food Bank, located at 600 Industrial Drive in St. Charles. West Chicago volunteers will be framing and siding five Habitat for Humanity homes near Pioneer Prairie Park, at the corner of Sherman Street and Pomeroy Street. Volunteers in Wheaton will be sorting food and also helping to beautify the outdoor spaces at People’s Resource Center. Volunteers for this project will meet at 201 S. Naperville Road.
