July 12, 2011 A Lucky miss for this car and anyone in the area when this 28 year old Linden crashed to the street. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photos Local Trees and Power are Down During Fast Paced Violent Storm The start of the morning looked sunny and
peaceful, but in a short time the sky darkened and the patter of rain
could be heard falling to the ground. This was just the start,
the storm front approached our area at speeds of over 60 miles an hour
and was labeled a "derecho".
Derecho is a term taken from the Spanish language meaning "straight",
and is used to mean a fast violent, mostly warm weather event with very
strong winds. This event hit the entire region of some 17 States
in a little over a day, leaving a 1,400 trail of destruction.
This fallen Linden was doomed from the start with a root strangling the trunk. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photos Many, if not all of the trees fallen in the
immediate region were found to have structural
weakness and already marked for destruction by nature, the storm just
brought every weakness to the front of the agenda. Multiple
arborists showed us the Linden's problems with the trunk being starved
from water, the cambium dried and the majority of the nutrition
delivery system starved. In short it was being choked off from
life by the girdled root system.
![]() The root of a tree is often girdled due to being left in the binding of a bag or mesh too long before being planted, but this can be corrected if dealt with early in the planting. This tree limb also came down in north Oak Park, due to illness within the trees system. This large limb missed several cars and buildings in the area when it was damaged by the strong winds.
Even with a special name, there would be no tree resurrections today. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photos AB Landscaping and Tree Service arrives on the scene. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo AB Landscaping and Tree Service begins the removal of the tree blocking the intersection at Kenilworth and Randolph. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. video Some Gardeners did get their free wood chips today. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo ![]() ![]() © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. published by Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. |
