The Mills Orchestra Today, Healthy and Looking for More.
Oak Park Journal photo
The Mills Orchestra is a nice group
of retired adults who enjoy
playing music, it's good for the
heart and a nice way to keep and
meet new people. The group
plays for events at the Oak Park
Arms Community and practices there
once a week in a nice
ballroom setting. Their backgrounds
and skills are broad and
varied, but the main thing to remember
is that these folks are
having fun and want you to meet
or let others know about their
schedule. Since they meet
on Mondays at 1:00 pm at the
Oak Park Arms, 408 S. Oak Park Avenue in Oak Park.
(The time is from 1:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. For more information
contact the director John Olivo at 773-545-5552.),
this means
that most either need to work nights, or be retired.
This
is a great way to share your music, keep your music
active,
and meet new people. Let your friends know,
members
of your church and neighbors that this group wants
them
to come and play along.

THE MILLS ORCHESTRA
The Mills Orchestra originated in 1973 as the Mills Music Makers.
Two members of the Senior Citizens Center of Oak Park and River Forest
got together to play "for fun". On November 13, 1974 The Mills Music Makers,
numbering nine musicians, gave their first concert. The name Mills Music
Makers was taken from the Mills House (Pleasant Home) where they rehearsed
and played concerts.

The next year they played three performances. 1975 was also the
year that Everett Cluxton was asked to serve as musical director and conductor.
Everett resigned as conductor sometime in 1987 and JoAnn Rehkopftook the
baton in hand. Today John Olivo holds the position.
While many of the orchestra members are from Oak Park and River Forest
there are some who come from Cicero, Chicago, LaGrange Park, Chicago and
even Elmwood Park. Always searching for new members there is no audition
required to join. The purpose is to provide an opportunity to get together
and play for enjoyment and to share with others by playing in concerts.
The range of music is a variety including marches, waltzes, Broadway
show tunes and some classical. Rehearsals are held from September to June
and Mondays at the Oak Park Arms Retirement Center located at 408 S. Oak
Park Avenue in Oak Park. The time is from 1:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. For more
information contact the director John Olivo at 773-545-5552.
