CAROLYN NEWBERRY SCHWARTZ

CAROLYN NEWBERRY SCHWARTZ:
GOALS FOR OAK PARK DISTRICT 97

Communication

I will work to establish a strong partnership between the Board the community by:

  •  Providing clear and direct methods to keep the Board informed about the
aspirations, concerns and needs of the Oak Park community and the families
of the children it serves by setting up a system in which Board members
attend various community meetings (APPLE, PTO, Supportive Education
          Association “SEA” and so on)

  •  Strengthening connections with existing parent groups and community
           organizations

  •  Broadening representation on district committees

Middle Level Education

I will work hard to ensure the new Middle Level Education Program meets
expectations by:

  •  Ensuring strong Board leadership and a sound administrative structure to
deliver a high-quality middle level education program that meets the social
           and emotional needs of students

  • Increasing a sense of community by advocating meaningful parent involvement,
and by improving the links between the feeder schools, the high school, public
and private service organizations and the business community

  • Making sure our teachers have the training and resources they need to
successfully implement a strong middle level education program

Academic Achievement

All District 97 students be engaged and enthusiastic learners and I will
work to achieve this by:

  • Ensuring that District 97 attracts and retains a diverse, talented and
         dedicated faculty

  • Clearly identifying educational and program needs at each school and
providing the resources to meet those needs

  • Providing all students with rich learning opportunities and instruction
          aimed at individual needs

  •  Improving math and science instruction
  • Setting high expectations that value effort and achievement at all levels

Diversity

A hallmark of Oak Park, diversity is a valuable asset for our schools and community.
 I support:

  • Establishing a committee to monitor diversity trends, evaluate policies, programs
and practices and propose any needed changes to support the diversity in
          our schools

  •  Carefully examining current permissive transfer policies and school boundaries
to determine if adjustments are needed

Program and Fiscal Accountability

I will work to improve the program and fiscal accountability of the Board by:

  • Publicizing Board, superintendent and principals’ goals and objectives
          and reporting on progress

  • Regularly assessing and monitoring programs, reporting results and encouraging
         discussion of proposed program changes

  • Establishing regular use of parent surveys to assess program effectiveness
  • Establishing a Finance Committee to increase public dialogue around the budget
process, promote understanding of public school finance, and collaborate with
other boards and organizations to lobby for funding reforms
