Congressman Danny Davis Addresses 6th Graders at
Longfellow School and Fields Many Interesting questions
from our Future Voters.

Congressman Danny Davis came to Oak Park to
visit Longfellow School at 9:00am on December 8, 1999.
The Congressman spoke about his efforts to help the
people in the district and how government works in
our country.  “The American public really wants us to
do something about Health care, patients’ Bill of Rights,
reducing class sizes in schools, and better pay for teachers”,
Congressman Davis said to children and staff present.
Some of the questions asked by a number of students
at the event were rather well placed and throughout.

Here is a sample of the some of the questions asked
by the sixth graders at Longfellow and their answers
from Congressman Davis.

“Who is going to be the next elected President?”
Congressman Davis, “ I think it's going to be a very
close race. I have endorsed Vice President Al Gore.
I am  more intimate with Mr. Gore, we both grew up
in Arkansas.  Gore has done a magnificent job in the
Administration and we will be helping him.”

Another child asks, “ Why didn't you help the
homeless on Lower Wacker Drive?”
Congressman Davis responded, “ I was opposed to
it, the removing of the persons on lower Wacker, but
I was in the minority.”  “I went down there (on lower
Wacker Drive) with them (the homeless) to warm my hands
with them.  I don’t know how people can live like that,
in that condition.  My political organization brings gloves
and other items, sometimes coats when we get them, down
to the shelters.  We do what we can.”

Congressman Davis went on the explain his involvement
with the Chicago based homeless paper called  ‘Street Wise’.
‘Street Wise’ currently has the third largest circulation of any
paper in the Chicago metropolitan area.  “For each dollar taken
in, the person selling gets 75 cents to keep as their profit.” adds
Congressman Davis.

Congressman Davis is on the Board of Street Wise and is pleased
with the progress it is making for the homeless.

The next student asked, “ Where do you plan to get the money
for running the government for the next few years?”  Congressman
Davis explains on how taxes are obtained from citizens, corporations,
and other noted funds.  Questions were also asked about how
a person gets elected to office, and how long of a term someone has.

Congressman Davis stressed the importance of education, the value
of being able to read,  and how campaign finance reform would make
it easier for people of working means to get to office.

Danny Davis also noted to the children, that something he was very
proud of during  his freshman term as a Representative, was his getting
the funds allocated for SRO’s (Single Room Occupancy housing-helping
many of the homeless) increased.  The original amount set aside
was for $210,000,00.00 and Congressman Davis helped to get
the amount increased to $750,000,000.00  (235 members voted with him).

Many of the questions asked by the children were either in keeping with
the feeling of kindness during the holidays or kind philanthropic attitudes
involving those in need.  I think it was a little of each and am proud to see this in our future leaders.
