HEMINGWAY 100TH BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA PLANNED FOR JULY 14-21, 1999
OAK PARK, IL  --   The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park is proud to announce the nation's premiere celebration of Hemingway's 1000th birthday, to be held July 14-21, 1999 in Oak Park, IL. An international audience, including Hemingway family members, celebrities and dignitaries will travel to Oak Park to honor the life and work of this Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning author. A series of exciting activities for all ages will occur continuously throughout the week and focus on multiple aspects of Hemingway's life. 

Visitors can dance to the music of the Stanley Paul Orchestra at an Opening Gala at Chicago's Four Seasons Hotel… Debate with Hemingway scholars during a three-day Literary Conference… Experience Hemingway's love of Spain at the outdoor Fiesta de Hemingway…Whet their appetite with a Moveable Feast dinner…Tour the newly restored Hemingway Birthplace…Celebrate with Hemingway family and friends at a lively Closing Gala Birthday Party! 

The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park operates the Hemingway Museum, 200 N. Oak Park Ave., and the Ernest Hemingway Birthplace at 339 N. JULY 14-21 HUMANITIES FESTIVAL, various locations in Oak Park, 5 pm to 7 pm each evening. In honor of Hemingway's Centennial birthday, a variety of art exhibitions, music and dance performances, lectures, film screenings, special tours and children's activities will be held each evening, between 5 pm and 7 pm. Festival highlights include performances by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Training Ensemble, screenings of Hollywood movies based on Hemingway novels, and a U.S. showing of the Cuban film, Hello Hemingway. 

JULY 14 (Wednesday) 

La Fete Ecrivain (The Writer's Feast), Four Seasons Hotel, Chicago, 6:30 pm. This Bastille Day celebration will feature dancing to the music of the Stanley Paul Orchestra, along with a sumptuous dinner, spirits and desserts. A silent auction will feature fabulous items, such as trips to Europe. Actor John Mahoney is Honorary Chair of this event, and special guests will include Hemingway family members and other celebrities. Tickets are 250 per person, black tie optional. 

JULY 15 (Thursday) 

MOVEABLE FEAST, Oak Park restaurants, (normal restaurant prices) Named after Hemingway's book on Paris, this evening will feature the cuisine of Oak Park's finest restaurants, along with live jazz music and a 5:30 pm reception at Boulevard Fine Art Gallery (809 Lake St.), where acclaimed artist Kay Smith's watercolor paintings depicting Hemingway's life will be on exhibit. JULY 16 –18 (Friday-Sunday) 

FIESTA DE HEMINGWAY, Scoville Park, Oak Park, 5 pm to 11 pm Fri. & Sat.; 2 pm to 10 pm Sun. This annual outdoor festival pays homage to Hemingway's intense love of Spain, which led him to call it, "The country that I loved more than any other, except my own." The three-day Fiesta will feature Swing Dance competitions, Spanish Flamenco Dancing, entertainment for children, a Hemingway Look-alike contest and a variety of bands performing continuously on two stages. Guests will enjoy Spanish wine tastings and dine on Hemingway's favorite Spanish and Latin dishes, prepared from recipes in The Hemingway Cookbook, with food prepared by Presenting Sponsor Whole Foods Market. Saturday will feature the Fiesta Parade and a Running of the Bulls. Free admission. 

JULY 17 (Saturday) 

FIESTA DE HEMINGWAY, Scoville Park, Oak Park, 5 pm to 11 pm. Saturday will feature a 5 pm Fiesta Parade, 6 pm Running of the Bulls, a variety of bands performing continuously on two stages and swing dance contests. Free admission. 

JULY 18 (Sunday) 

FIESTA DE HEMINGWAY, Scoville Park, Oak Park, 2 pm to 10 pm. A special Children's Festival will be held between 2 pm and 5 pm. Contact the Hemingway Foundation at 708.848.2222 for specific activities scheduled for this day. Free admission. 

"IT JUST CATCHES" play by Carol Hemingway, Oak Park/River Forest High School, 201 N. Scoville Ave., 3 pm & 8 pm. An adaptation by Carol Hemingway of three short stories by Ernest Hemingway will be performed by the Montana Repertory Company. Tickets are 18. 

PICTURING HEMINGWAY: A WRITER IN HIS TIME, The Hemingway Museum, 200 N. Oak Park Ave. A landmark exhibit on Hemingway's life will be unveiled at The Ernest Hemingway Museum, and later travel nationally to other major Hemingway sites, libraries and museums. Curated by the Smithsonian Museum's National Portrait Gallery in collaboration with The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park, this fascinating exhibit will feature nearly 100 historic photographs from both public and private collections, insightful text, and personal memorabilia. 

LITERARY CONFERENCE RECEPTION, The Hemingway Museum, 200 N. Oak Park Ave., (4:30-6:30 pm). This reception will serve as a kick-off to the July 19-21 International Literary Conference. 

JULY 19-21 (Monday to Wednesday) 

INTERNATIONAL LITERARY CONFERENCE, Oak Park & River Forest High School, 9 to 5 pm Mon-Wed. Titled, Hemingway Centennial Conference: Literary and Historical Perspectives at 100, this three-day conference will consider Hemingway's role as a major literary figure in the 20th century, as well as his legacy as we approach the millennium. An unprecedented array of Hemingway friends and scholars will provide keynote lectures, lead panel discussions and present original papers. Full conference registration is 110/members, 125/non-members and 75/students. 

JULY 19 (Monday)

DINNER WITH PATRICK HEMINGWAY, MarLac House, Oak Park. (7 pm to 9:30 pm). One of the Centennial week's highlights will be the release of Ernest Hemingway's last posthumous novel, True at First Light, by Simon and Schuster. Hemingway's son Patrick will be on hand to speak about the book, which he edited. 30 per person.

HEMINGWAY BIRTHPLACE DEDICATION, 339 N. Oak Park Ave. 8 am. The Centennial week will culminate on Hemingway's 100th birthday at the home where he was born. The sounding of the cornet and other festivities are planned for 8 am on the home's porch to herald Hemingway's 100th birthday. Free. 

HEMINGWAY BIRTHDAY LUNCHEON, Oak Park Arts Center, 200 N. Oak Park Ave., 12 noon. Hemingway family members will be honored guests at a 12 noon luncheon, which will include a fascinating program on how the Hemingway Birthplace is being restored to its Victorian elegance. 25/person. 

HEMINGWAY'S 100th BIRTHDAY PARTY, Hemingway Manor, 104 S. Marion St., Oak Park., 6 pm. Join Hemingway's family, friends and various celebrities as they lead a festive birthday party honoring the author's life and literary genius. Illinois First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan is Honorary Chair of the evening, which will feature flamenco, swing and tango dancing, along with a variety of music and culinary delights created by renowned chefs from Chicago's best restaurants. Tickets are 150, black-tie optional.
