School Referendum
Debate at Oak Park High School

There were only some 104 persons who attended the meeting on Monday, March 16, at the High School small auditorium.  I am not counting the journalists.  It would also be interesting to see how many of the people attending had not already had their opinions in place before the debate or rather discussion began.

Speaking for the YES vote on  the Referendum were the President of
District 97, Mr. Stephen Huth, Peggy Wilson, Barbara Suggs Mason, and
Pam Meyerson.  Speaking for the Opposition were Jack Crowe, Mary Beth
Cvengros, Debbie Mc Kinney, and Sharon Patchak Layman.

Mr. Jack Crowe speaks to a question above.  Mr. Stephen Huth addresses the issues to the audience.

The opposition raises doubts about the issue.  Mr. Stephen Huth reminds the listeners that the committees have had over 4 dozen open meetings, 2 and a half years of research, participation of 350 persons, made up of teachers, parents, and consultants.  The opposition would like to have had the board choose another option, other than the one replacing the two junior highs.  There were some good points here and there from both sides.  The discussion was informative, but also limited since the time was limited.  The strongest points for approval of the plan came from Mr. Huth.  He showed clearly that the track record and history of Education in Oak Park is meeting its objectives for the past 9 years and that the finances have been safe and secure.
This is an excellent record and a history of the board making the right choices for the future of Oak Park Elementary Schools.

Citizens meet with speakers after the talks, and the debate goes on.
