Hornish Sizzles, Wins ABC Supply Company/AJ Foyt 225

by Dan Peters

With temperatures reaching the mid-90s, a near record for this date, Pole sitter Sam Hornish Jr. led the first 111 laps of the ABC Supply Co./A.J. Foyt 225 at The Milwaukee Mile. The final eight, though, turned out to be the most  important.

Honish and last year's winner Dario Franchitti, hooked up in a
heated battle during the final 15 laps "It was a heck of a race out there today for Marlboro Team Penske. The team put a good car underneath me today. I battled a lot today. I really wanted to win after we had that little problem with Helio. I don't ever want to see that happen. I feel real bad for that guy. It's close racing, and you can't take it back. You
've got to go out there and try and win it,
and I was pushing it really hard there at the end. I was trying to
baby the gearbox, and make sure I didn't hurt it at all. I wasn't
down shifting quite as hard as I needed going into Turn 1, and
the car pushed up and got into the marbles. I did all I could trying
to save it and keep it off the wall. That's how he (Franchitti) got around me because I still didn't have my momentum back up yet.
It was a tough race for us today, but I'm happy."

Rookie Sensation and crowd favorite Danica Patrick was strong
early on in the race, but fell victim to the scorching track temperatures of 120 plus.. With air temperatures reaching the mid-90s, the racing surface became slippery. That could have
played a part in rookie Patrick's No. 16 Rahal Letterman Racing Argent Pioneer Honda spin exiting turn 2, making hard contact
with the wall between Turns 1 and 2. She exited the car without assistance from the Delphi IRL Safety Team. Patrick was running sixth before suffering her second DNF in 10 races.

"It was such a sudden snap. The groove had definitely widened
out through the race. I was pretty much where I was the whole
time, not going any faster, and it just snapped.

It very well could have been my fault, But I heard Dario had
some action in his steering wheel on the same lap, so I don't
know maybe it was my fault, but I'll take the blame" Patrick said.
