23, 2005![]() Oak Park Man Murdered on the Street in Daylight. by Ed Vincent Mr. Peter D'Agostino was believed to be coming home from his job at the University of Illinois in Chicago when someone either on the train (CTA's Blue Line at Austin Boulevard ) following him or perhaps in a car observing him, began their attack. A neighbor is reported to have heard someone saying "No" loudly, and then the sound of car pulling away. Reports this morning by some of the news crews in the city of Chicago had reported that Mr. Peter D'Agostino had been shot to death. There was no shooting, but there was a killing - with a blunt instrument to the head. He was only a couple of blocks from his house, when the sound of a car burning rubber got the attention of a resident on the block and another person, a nurse and her husband stopped their car and came to assist the fallen man. The severe blow to the head eventually took his life. He is survived by a wife and child in Oak Park. Mr. Peter D'Agostino had published a book on the history of the Catholic Church, but there has been no indication of any controversy coming from the book. He was a well liked Associate Professor of History at the University of Illinois. The crime appears to be one of passion, perhaps extreme passion, so perhaps the trail will become clearer to the murderer once police continue on the trail to find justice in this crime. Oak Park police are wanting to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard something at the time of this murder. Please call 1-708-358-5537 if you had heard or seen anything in the area at that time. 5:32 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2005 near the 1100 block of South Harvey Avenue. Below is a link to his book from last year. Rome in America Book Oak Park Police Announcement Below: Police Seek Public's Help in Homicide Investigation Oak Park Police are asking citizens for their help in the investigation of the apparent homicide of resident Peter D'Agostino late Wednesday afternoon. Police and emergency medical personnel responding to a 9-1-1 call at 5:32 p.m. found D'Agostino, 42, lying in the grass in the 1100 block of South Harvey Avenue, unconscious and bleeding from a head wound. He was transported to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood where he was pronounced dead at 6:01 p.m. by the emergency room attending physician. The Cook County Medical Examiner later determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma. Oak Park Police Chief Rick C. Tanksley said the investigation is still in the early stages, and is urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area to call 708.358.5537. "Such an incident is very unusual for Oak Park," Tanksley said. "When tragedies of this kind occur, it is important for us to pull together as a community to get the case solved quickly." Tanksley said all available resources of the Police Department have been focused on the investigation. "An incident of this kind is something no community or police officer wants to encounter," Tanksley said. "But the anguish we are experiencing in no way can compare with that of the victim's family. That's why I am urging representatives of the news media to come to us for information and not the family. We will do everything we can to provide information of value to an understandably concerned public, so long as the information does not negatively impact the investigation." ![]() © Oak Park Journal published by Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. |
