Ryuichi Sakamoto's album Mototronic
is so varied in
musical styles and forms it
could be given as sample of just about all that is good in world music,
and by far the farthest thing from boring or status quo.
The musicality of this grand
portion of composition
and orchestral talent is made
even that more relavent
by the varied efforts and sounds
brought to life by
the gifted mind of Ryuichi Sakamoto.
This one album may very well
make you a new
fan of Maestro Sakamoto.

Mototronic reflects the breadth
of Sakamoto's
artistry. One of the world's
most popular and enduring instrumentalists, the
classically trained Sakamoto
first caught the public's
attention as one of the godfathers
of techno-pop in
the late 1970s,
and went on to become a universally
admired composer and performer of popular, orchestral
and film music. He not
only shared the Oscar for Best Original Score for The Last Emperor
in 1987, he also acted in the
film - a dual role he
took on in the 1983 cult favorite
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.
Mototronic includes 14 tracks
from Sakamoto's 1987
album Neo Geo as well as five
albums that have been
released by Sony Classical -
1999's Discord; BTTB and Cinemage, both released the following year; and
Sakamoto's two internationally acclaimed recordings with the Morelenbaums
(as Morelenbaum2/Sakamoto)
- Casa and A Day in New York -devoted to the music of Brazil's Antonio
Carlos Jobim and other bossa nova composers.
The recording features three
remixes of classic
Sakamoto tracks - a string quartet
remix of "Lost Child" from Neo Geo, a Rare Force 2 meg remix of "Anger"
from Discord and a new mix of
"Insensatez" from A Day in New
York.
Mototronic also includes three
tracks from Cinemage
("Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence:
Forbidden Colours," "The Last Emperor" and "Little Buddha") and three from
BTTB ("Energy Flow," "Opus" and "Railroad Man"), as well as "O Grande Amor"
from Casa and "Desafinado" from A Day in New York, the latter two featuring
Jaques and Paula Morelenbaum. From Neo Geo come the title track, "Risky"
and "Before Long."
